Composite Brake Discs
Since 1994 the SHW Group has manufactured composite brake discs in series products. The composite brake discs produced by the SHW Group consist of a friction ring made of iron and aluminium pot. Both components are connected by steel pins, so that the friction ring can expand axially (a so-called floating bearing arrangement). This guarantees that when heated, the friction ring can expand independently of the brake disc's aluminium support. Under high stress, this reduces heat-induced tension on the brake disc and also reduces the risk of cracks forming on the transition between aluminium support and friction ring. The brake disc thus combines extreme durability with the highest safety. Moreover, a composite brake disc weighs less than a conventional one made from iron. The use of aluminium can achieve an overall weight reduction of up to 8 kg per vehicle.
